Good distortion pedals?

Well i wanted to know what distortion pedal i should use for a single coil fender strat i am kind of a beginner but I want a distortion pedal that is versatile and could play lots of different types of rock (punk and metal). I was looking at the Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal or their Boss ML-2 metal core. Do metal distortion pedals only work good for metal or can they be played to lots of stuff? And how heavy can the DS-1 get? I mostly play stuff like blink 182, nirvana, green day but i am trying to start playing metal stuff.

In my opinion, the DS-1 is meant for more alternative/punk than metal. It has more versatility than something like the ML-2 or MT-2 (metalcore and metal zone, respectively), in that it can go from relatively clean to very distorted, where as the high gain pedals are much more limited in terms of less distortion vs lots of distortion.

To see what I mean, compare the two sound examples below – while cleaner sounds are possible on the ML-2, the examples given are where that pedal sounds best.

What I would suggest is to cut your mids a little on your amp if you end up getting the DS-1. No pedal can really do it all, but its important to know that you can cop a high-gain rock/metal sound by messing with the EQ after the distortion. So playing around a little with the amp’s EQ and whatnot will be a good way of bringing out a metal sound from the DS-1.

Something else you can do with the DS-1 that you can’t do with the metal pedals is clean it up and use it as a booster pedal for either a solo boost or to push your amp harder. Some amps have a good tone when pushed hard – this is something that many rock and metal musicians have done. Turn your gain down, your level up, and put the tone knob at half-way. Put your amp on its dirty channel, and futz with the gain and EQ and see what happens. Sometimes it can be good, sometimes not so much. Play with the pedal’s volume level, the guitar’s volume, the tone knobs on both your guitar and the pedal, etc.

This is something that metal pedals cannot do – too much gain in a booster pedal and you’ll sound like poo (technical term).
